Fin choice can change the feel of a board as much as a shape tweak. Use this guide to pick a setup that matches your waves and the way you surf—without guessing.

Single Fin

Smooth, classic lines and strong trim. Great for longboards and riders who prioritize flow over quick snaps.

2+1 (Single + Side Bites)

Adds stability and hold while keeping that longboard feel. A versatile option when conditions change day to day.

Thruster vs Quad

Thrusters are predictable and balanced. Quads can feel faster and drivey, especially in weaker surf, but can be looser depending on placement.

FAQ

Which fin setup is best for small waves?

Many surfers like quads for speed and drive in weaker surf, but a well-sized thruster can still work if the board has enough volume and glide.

Can I switch setups on one board?

If your board has the boxes for it, yes. It’s one of the easiest ways to tune feel without changing the board.

Should fins match the board size?

Generally yes—bigger boards often want more fin area for hold. But fin choice also depends on how hard you push and the waves you ride.
